Interested in becoming or currently a BRMSA Umpire? The following contains important information held at BRMSA Umpire meetings and training sessions to help you train to become or refresh your umpiring skills. This information is just an aid in helping umpires and not intended to replace BRMSA Umpire Meetings nor district and state umpire clinics that all BRMSA umpires should participate in at least one prior to the each season.

Where do I begin? If you are interested in applying to become a BRMSA umpire for the 2010 season you must 1st contact the BRMSA Head Umpire, Randy Knoop at (231)796-1494 or brmsa@sbcglobal.net with your intentions. Next, you will need to fill out and submit a 2010 BRMSA Umpire Application Form. New and returning umpires must complete this form each year.

Now What? Attend a State or District ASA Umpire Clinic in your area and register to become an ASA Umpire. The current schedule for 2010 State & District Clinics may be found here. State & District Clinics are free of charge to attend and usually held within an hour drive of the Big Rapids Area. Upon your arrival you will need to sign in and register for the clinic. The clinic will give you instruction on the latest rule and rule changes along with basic mechanics and tips umpires need to become a successful. You will also have the opportunity to register as an ASA umpire at any of these clinics and buy any uniforms and equipment you may need.

ASA Umpire Application You must be an an ASA or an MHASA registered umpire. The cost to apply fo ASA is $40 before May 1st and $45 after May 1st. ASA does not require that you attend a State or District Clinic in order to apply to become an umpire but Randy prefers you do.Your registration fee will include a 2010 ASA Umpire card, 2010 ASA official rulebook, pocket bat sizing ring, uniform & equipment order forms along with a few tidbits of other important information. Your registration packet will arrive in approximately 2-8 weeks depending on the time of year. A 2010 ASA Umpire Application form is available here on the BRMSA website. The $40 fee may seem like a high amount of money to invest but pays for itself in less than 1 nights work as a BRMSA Umpire and can be written off as part of your 1099 income.
